A Reflection on Forgiveness from Marilyn Day
When
our eight year old son was so sick and dying (complications of Lupus) my father
said to me, "Remember death is not the worst thing that can happen to
Mark." That was a shock and I felt that death was the worst that could
happen to Mark. But as I thought about it, my dad was right. Mark had been
exposed to God's love and forgiveness all his life. Our pastor at the time said
that Mark's life of faith and acceptance of the situation spoke a louder sermon
than he could ever preach from the pulpit. We made a lot of mistakes, but Mark
knew that we loved him and wanted the best for him. When the doctors wanted to
do a third peritoneal dialysis we pleaded with them to let him die in peace and
finally they agreed.
Jesus
became sin for us that we might be forgiven. However sometimes the person
hardest for us to forgive is ourselves. We beat ourselves up over our mistakes
and often can’t get beyond them. But if we ask, God will forgive and even
forget! We need to accept that forgiveness and move on.
Sin
constricts and binds us. Forgiveness sets us free to be the person God intends
us to be!
Heavenly Father, Thank you that Jesus
paid the price for us that we might be forgiven and live daily in that
forgiveness. In your son’s name. Amen.
“And
be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ
forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32
